Grand Canyon is 280 miles long and 20 miles wide area carved by the Colorado river, 6000 feet at the deepest revealing 2 billion years of rock layers. Before the Europeans arrived Indians lived in the caves of the river banks and considered the area holy. President and conservationist Theodor Roosevelt established the Grand Canyon national monument 11th of January 1908.
